Then again, maybe Chloe is just happy to have another girl around to hang out with to give herself a much-needed break from the boys and their antics. since, y'know, they've never met until now. Now I'm sure it will be different in the episodes themselves, but as far as the artwork goes, I'm just saying it's a little weird how out of the Journeys trio, Chloe seems to be the most excited over Dawn's presence. Ash and Dawn travelled all of Sinnoh together and reunited for some time in Unova, so you'd think his focus would be on her after not seeing her (a good friend of his) after so long. Moving on to the official artwork itself, I do think it's kinda interesting how Ash is so enthusiastically focused on Goh and not her. May was the first of Ash's companions to be given a significant story that ran concurrent with Ash's, but by the time the next saga rolled around, the writers had refined this balancing of two main storylines and Dawn benefitted greatly from the mistakes made/learned from the handling of May's story and character arc (which was still good, by the way!).
Out of all of Ash's companions, I feel like the writers handled her story and character arc the best. To start off, I gotta say I'm thrilled to see Dawn back as she's one of my all-time favorite Pokégirls! 😃 He goes out of his way here to point out Goh's unworthiness to be Ash's friend, which seems pretty mean on the surface. The anime look will be shoved in spin-off territory, while kids on Twitter are disgusted by the fact one of the original Pokémon manga was drawn by a porn artist. Perhaps in the next Pokémon generation, our new starter will be a bear that's shaped like a pear. Perhaps in the future, Pokémon looking like this will be the status quo.
This is what we're going to be looking at as the face of the franchise for the next half a decade. I could shrug it off for a spin-off game like Detective Pikachu or Pokémon Go, but this is a mainline game. The models look like they came off some cheap ad infested Western app you downloaded off Google Play. If anything, I think the idea was to create something "less sexual" for the masses.Įven if there are customization features to get your character feeling like a Pokégirl again, you're still going to have to deal with the artstyle.
They've had foreigners design Pokémon, they've had foreigners write Pokémon episodes, not to mention there's an entire Hollywood live action subbranch now. As of late, Japan's been using the international Pokémon logo a lot, while referring to the English localized names even in Japan-only stuff. I think more likely they're trying to appeal to the overseas audience. If the idea is to have "no protagonist," they should still have a flashy placeholder character like any MMO.

They might show up in the TV anime, they might even get their own short anime, and they're definitely will be protagonists in the Pokémon Special manga. Maybe, but these characters are still going to be all over the marketing. I've seen arguments that perhaps the idea is they're supposed to be customization friendly. They strip away almost everything that makes Pokémon "Pokémon," from the bold flashy outfits to Sugimori's narrow eye style. They look really bland, kinda like NPCs, designed to look as neutral as possible. Ignoring the fact that the new starters look like Neopets, I'm not big on the look of the protagonists. I'm not a huge fan of the new Pokémon designs, as I've kinda pointed out today already.
